Icebreaker collaboration creates new opportunities for research in the Arctic

The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat is one of 15 partners from 13 countries that have joined forces in a EU-funded collaboration to improve the capacity for marine-based research in the ice-covered Arctic Ocean.

In the project Arctic Research Icebreaker Consortium (ARICE), they aim at better coordinating the existing polar research fleet, at offering scientists access to six research icebreakers, one of them being the Swedish icebreaker Oden, and at collaborating closely with the maritime industry. The European Commission funds the project, which is coordinated by the German Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), with 6 million Euros.

The project kick-off meeting takes place at the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven 6–7 February 2018.
