Call for proposals: SAS expedition

The Synoptic Arctic Survey (SAS) is an international initiative aiming to simultaneously collect empirical data in several locations in the Arctic Ocean. Measurements will be performed using a set of full depth hydrographic, biogeochemical and biological sections.

The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat is supporting the SAS initiative and will organise an expedition with the icebreaker I/B Oden to a region NE of Greenland, please see the white box marked on the map below. It will take place during part of the period of August–September 2020.

The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat now invites the Swedish science community to apply for participation in the expedition. The proposals should interact with the intentions of the international SAS expedition.

Workshop for approved projects

For all approved projects, the Swedish Polar Research Secretary is welcoming all to a workshop on November 20, 2019, please save the date! The workshop will be held in conjunction with Polarforum, which will take place on November 19. Both workshops are held in Umeå. The agenda for the workshop will be focused on refining the science plan and discuss logistics solutions to optimize the support for the defined science plan.

Scientists affiliated with a Swedish higher education institution can apply. Please e-mail your proposal, your CV and your publication list to with the registration number 2019-148 in the subject line. Please use the application form below:

Proposals will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Feasibility onboard I/B Oden
  • Contribution to the international SAS initiative
  • Scientific excellence of the principal investigator
  • Experience of extensive field work and supervision of field works

Deadline for applications is October 1st, 2019. Applicants will get notified as soon as possible, but not later than October 17th, 2019, whether their project can be included in the expedition or not.
